In a major policy update, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has announced significant expansions to its post-study work framework aimed at international students. Effective November 16, 2026, the country will broaden eligibility for its traditional Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV) while introducing a brand-new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa to give international graduates more time and pathways to build their careers in New Zealand.
These updates provide flexible options for international students—especially those enrolled in diploma and specialized higher-education courses.
1. Expanded Eligibility for Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV)
Under the updated guidelines, students who complete a Level 7 Graduate Diploma in New Zealand will now be eligible to apply for a Post-Study Work Visa, provided they meet specific academic prerequisites:
Full-Time On-Campus Study: Applicants must complete the full duration of their Level 7 Graduate Diploma program full-time in New Zealand.
No Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): Credits obtained through cross-crediting or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) from previous studies or other institutions will not count toward visa eligibility.
Bachelor’s Degree Requirement: Applicants must hold a completed bachelor’s degree from either a recognized New Zealand university or an overseas university.
No Recency Limit or Assessment Needed: There is no strict completion timeframe or deadline limit on when the bachelor’s degree was obtained. Additionally, overseas bachelor’s degrees will generally not require an International Qualification Assessment (IQA), though applicants must provide official graduation certificates and academic transcripts at the time of application.
2. Introduction of the New “Short-Term Graduate Work Visa”
For international students who do not qualify for the standard multi-year Post-Study Work Visa, New Zealand is launching a new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa. This route acts as a bridge, giving graduates open work rights to gain practical experience or transition onto longer-term work visas (such as the Accredited Employer Work Visa).
Key Eligibility Criteria:
-
Eligible Qualifications: Completion of a Level 5 to Level 7 qualification studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks.
- Proof of Funds: Applicants must demonstrate available maintenance funds of at least NZD $5,000 to support their stay.
- Application Window: Applications must be submitted within 3 months of the expiry date of the applicant’s New Zealand student visa.
Important Conditions & Restrictions of the Short-Term Visa
While the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa offers open employment rights across New Zealand industries, it carries strict structural limitations:
6-Month Duration (Non-Extendable): The visa is granted for a maximum validity of 6 months. It cannot be renewed or extended, and an individual can only receive it once in their lifetime.
No Business Ownership: Visa holders are permitted to work for employers under formal employment agreements or contracts for services, but they cannot operate or own a business.
No Family Sponsorship Rights: Holders of this short-term visa cannot sponsor a partner for a Work Visa or support dependent children for a Dependent Child Student Visa.
How and When to Apply
Applications for both the expanded Post-Study Work Visa criteria and the new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa will officially open on November 16, 2026. All applications will be processed digitally through Immigration New Zealand’s Enhanced Immigration Online (ADEPT) platform.
International students and prospective applicants are advised to review their academic qualification levels and enrollment conditions to ensure they maximize their post-study options in New Zealand. You can also visit SIG Overseas Chittagong for profile assessment and visa processing!
